Lets make a new set of outdoor pillows! So I’ve got outdoor furniture that I love. It’s in great shape, and the pillows are holding up well, but I’d love to change them out. There’s only one problem–outdoor pillows can cost an arm & a leg by the time you buy all that you need! Today I’ve got a solution for all of us, and that is how to make outdoor pillows on a budget. We can totally DIY this project, get some great looking pillows, and save money all at the same time. Stick around!
To get started with this project, you need to pay a visit to your local thrift shop. Goodwill, Savers, Deseret Industries, whatever it is doesn’t matter. Just go there and find some pillows to makeover. It doesn’t matter what they look like, so choose pillows to match the comfort level and size you desire.
What else do you need for this project? Some outdoor fabrics to cover your pillows, and thread to match. That’s it! To know how much fabric you need, measure each pillow you’re using. Double the dimensions of the pillow, add about 2″ for seam allowances, and that’s how much fabric you’ll need for each pillow.
It’s a good idea to wash the pillows before you make the new covers. Once they are clean and dry, you’re ready to get started. Lay the pillow down on the fabric you’re using to cover it. Press the pillow down, and cut the fabric so that you have about an inch of excess fabric around the pillow for a seam allowance. Use the first square of fabric you cut to cut the second piece. Lay the two squares of fabric with right sides together and pin them.
Sew the fabric square together, leaving an opening on one side as pictured below. This opening is how you will get the pillow inside its new cover.
Use scissors to snip off the corners of the fabric before you turn the casing right sides out. Stuff the pillow inside the casing. Turn the edges of the opening under and pin them together. Now hand stitch the opening closed, and you’re done!
Many thanks to Prodigal Pieces for the idea and inspiration for this post!
