Calling all DIY lovers! A rustic flag is the perfect way to decorate your home for the Fourth of July. And if you have a farmhouse home, it’s the perfect Americana to display all summer or even all year long. You don’t even have to spend a small fortune to buy one, because they are pretty easy to make. Here’s how to make a rustic flag for your home!

Rustic American flags are a hot topic for home decor. You've seen them at boutiques and while they are super cute, they can be spendy. Don't waste your hard earned pennies when you can make your own. Pickled Barrel can show you how. Just read the post. #rusticflag #rustichomedecor #howto #diyproject #pickledbarrelblog

Rustic Flag DIY

Supplies

  • wood for the red & white stripes {these need to be long}
  • wood for the blue and stars {shorter pieces ok}
  • a Cricut machine for cutting out your desired star shapes
  • a sheet of plywood for the back
  • paint and stain
  • 1 1/4″ nails and a hammer, or a small nail gun
  • a table or hand saw for cutting the wood
  • a small length of chain and two screws for hanging your creation

Rustic Flag: Wood

The wood that you use for your flag can either be new wood from your local lumber supplier, or reclaimed wood from a fence or a wood pallet. Reclaimed wood is best for its inherent rustic beauty, but new wood can be aged to look old.

Decide on the dimensions you want for your finished flag. This will partly depend on the space where you plan to display it. Cut the bottom 6 stripes {three will be white, three will be red} to that length. Cut the remaining 7 red and white stripes at half that length.

You will need approximately 11 strips of wood placed perpendicular to the red & white stripes to form the blue part of the flag. Cut them to fit.

Use a stain or spray paint to paint the red, white and blue stripes. Allow them to dry thoroughly. If you desire, leave the natural wood instead of painting white stripes. It looks exceptionally rustic this way!

Lay out the flag design on the plywood backing. When it looks as you would like, nail the stripes to the plywood.

Use the Cricut machine to cut out a star stencil for the blue Union section of your flag. Spray the stars on with white spray paint.

If you desire to hang up your creation, add two screws to the back, on either side along the top. Attach the chain for easy and secure hanging.
