Whether you have a fireplace, a backyard fire pit, or you just want to be more prepared for an emergency, a fire starting kit is a great thing to store. With any one of these DIY fire starter projects, you’ll be able to start a fire quickly and easily, anytime you need. These DIY fire starters are also budget friendly. Take a look!
Fire starter #1 involves those round cotton pads you can buy in the makeup aisle at your favorite store, or even your local dollar store. Light a candle, it doesn’t matter if it’s scented or not, and wait for some melted wax to accumulate. Blow out the candle, and immediately dip about 3/4 of a cotton pad into the melted wax. Allow the wax to harden. Store the fire starters in a Ziploc bag. To use, just light the clear area of the pad.
Another easy DIY fire starter takes advantage of the dryer lint we all accumulate. Just cut up a cardboard egg carton into individual cups, and stuff the cups with lint. Fold each cup and dip in melted wax.
Instead of just crumpling some newspaper, take a cue from Martha Stewart and twist the newspaper and tie securely with twine. It will quickly start a fire, but will burn a lot longer than crumpled paper.
If you’re well-stocked with shredded paper in your paper shredder, you can also use that to make a fire starter. Just use an egg carton and wax as above, but substitute shredded paper for dryer lint.
Another method that works well {but also smells great} is to use pinecones. Gather up pinecones from your yard, and let them dry out well. Tie a string around the middle of the pinecone and loop it up through the top of the pinecone. Now dip the pinecones into hot, melted paraffin wax. Allow them to dry until the wax hardens. To start a fire, just light the string.
