How To Make A Heat Pack Fast
One of the best parts about making your own heat pack is that you can choose whatever pattern you like in a cotton or cotton blend fabric. Flannel is a cozy option as well. The heat packs pictured above were made by Jessica at Life as a Mom. A good finished size is 12″x6″.
For a 12x 6 finished heat pack, cut a piece of fabric 12″ by 12″. Fold it in half with the right sides together. Sew one 12″ side and one 6″ side, leaving the other 6″ side open. Turn the fabric sleeve right side out.
Fill the sleeve with long grain white rice {no Minute Rice!} until it is two-thirds full. Tuck the unfinished edges of the open end inside, then hold them together and sew the opening closed. It’s a good idea to double stitch this opening for extra strength.
There you have it! A finished reusable heat pack in under 10 minutes. To heat your pack, place it in the microwave with a cup of water and heat in one minute increments until it achieves your desired warmth.
For an even faster heat pack with no sewing, grab an old tube sock, fill it two-thirds full with rice, and then sew the top closed. Done!
