If you’re like me, you love the look of wire baskets, and would love to use a ton of them for both organization and décor purposes in your home. But there’s one major drawback–they aren’t cheap! Luckily for the both of us, I found some great inspiration in the form of simple DIY wire baskets. These are so simple to make, I think anyone can do it. Take a look!
Basic supplies:
Optional supplies include:
- leather, vinyl or fabric liner
- pipe straps or additional leather to make handles
- spray paint
- awl
Step One
Decide how big you want your baskets to be. You need to cut a sheet from the hardware cloth to the dimensions you want. The basic formula used by Marilyn at The Melrose Family is this: (height + width + height) x (height + length + height). This formula is going to give you a piece of hardware cloth in the shape of a cross. Notice that four of the sides are cut to leave the longer wires extending out. These wires are used to join the sides of the basket together.
Step Two
Now fold up the sides of your basket. A great tip from A Beautiful Mess is to use a straight edge to help you fold and bend the wire cloth easily.
Step Three
Use the long nose pliers to bend the longer extending wires around the opposite side. This will join the sides together.
You have formed your first DIY wire basket! You can stop here, or continue with customizing your basket however you wish. At The Melrose Family, pipe straps are used to form handles on the face of the basket.
At A Beautiful Mess, the baskets are spray painted in bright colors, like this green. Two leather straps make cute handles. The baskets can also be lined with leather, vinyl, or fabric of your choice.
