Recipes To Help You Cook Like Joanna

If you already own a copy of Magnolia Table, you know that Joanna’s cooking style is all about gathering together with the people you love. And what kinds of dishes fit that vision? Comfort foods! One of the best things Joanna makes are biscuits. There’s just nothing like a batch of fresh, hot biscuits served with butter and homemade jam. Luckily for us, this is a personal recipe that Joanna shared widely around the time Magnolia Table was released, so we’re sharing it here just in case you missed it!

JoJo’s Biscuits

  • 4 cups self-rising flour, plus more for the work surface
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 sticks salted butter (¾ pound), cold, cut into ½-inch pieces or grated
  • 2 large eggs, beaten, plus 1 large egg for brushing
  • 1½ cups buttermilk, or as needed, plus 1 tablespoon for brushing

Use a large mixing bowl to combine the flour, baking powder and baking soda. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender, until the butter is about the size of small peas and coated with flour.

Using a wooden spoon, stir in the beaten eggs until combined. Add the buttermilk all at once and stir just until the dough starts to come together in one big mass. It should be sticky. If it’s too dry, add more buttermilk a tablespoon at a time until it is the right consistency. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap, and refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes, and up to 8 hours {or overnight}.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees with the rack in the center. Line a baking sheet with parchment.

Turn the biscuit dough onto a floured surface, and use your hands {also floured} to press it gently into a rectangle about 1/2″ thick.

Use a standard size, floured biscuit cutter to cut approximately 20 biscuits. You can press the remaining scraps together to cut a few more biscuits if desired.

Lay biscuits on prepared baking sheet so that the sides of the biscuits are touching.

In a small bowl, beat the remaining egg and 1 tablespoon buttermilk together. Brush the tops of the biscuits with this mixture before placing in the oven.

Bake until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.

Let the biscuits cool slightly before serving. These are best the same day they’re baked.
