I know I’ve seen plenty of exposed wooden beams on Fixer Upper that inspired me–how about you? There’s just something about them that really warms up a space! In hopes of inspiring you today, I’ve rounded up 12 design ideas for exposed wooden beams.

1.Exposed beam ceilings can be luxurious, as in this example of an elegant living room.

2. The vaulted ceiling in this room is done entirely in natural wood. It makes a spectacular backdrop against the white fireplace and walls.

This vast living room stands beneath a soaring vaulted ceiling, entirely in rich natural wood. The exposed A-frame beams hang just above the white walls, adding contrast and detail over the elegant space.

3. This living room features exposed beams with a very rustic finish. They really stand out against the red tile floors and are set off by lots of natural light.

The warm red tile flooring and white walls make for a rich contrast in this living room, beneath a sleek wood panel ceiling with exposed rustic-style beams. The vast room is surrounded by windows and features a large fireplace.

4. Exposed wooden beams can live dramatically well in even a contemporary space. They offer a warmth you can’t get anywhere else.

Here's a more contemporary living room design, with white walls, hardwood flooring, and wide arch entries. The white ceiling features the high contrast appearance of rich natural wood exposed beams.

5. This living room is proof positive that your exposed wooden beams don’t have to stand out. They can blend beautifully into the color scheme of your home, yet still provide interest and warmth to the space.

In this expansive open-plan room, the living room glows with the warmth of hardwood flooring and bright wood curved beams crossing the ceiling. Large openings toward a balcony blur the line between indoors and out.

6. In another example, you can see that the beams in this vaulted ceiling are painted the same color as the walls and ceiling, yet they provide interest and structure that draws your eye upward.

This open plan living room sports a high contrast look with dark hardwood flooring and white walls and ceiling. The vaulted ceiling is crossed with white exposed beams for a truly unified look.

7. Here is what happens when you match the exposed beams in your ceiling to the tone of hardwood floors. The dark wood is what ties the whole room together.

With a sloped white wood panel ceiling, this living room infuses some visual complexity and textural nuance into its space with dark wood exposed beams, matching the tone of the hardwood flooring.

8. A rustic cabin is one of the more common uses for exposed beams. It just wouldn’t be quite the same if they weren’t there!

This vast living room within a modern rustic styled home is flush with natural wood from the flooring on up. Exposed beam logs run the length of the massive vaulted ceiling, matching the walls for texture and tone.

9. In a room with lots of natural light from large windows like this one, you can get away with the dark beams that stand out in contrast to the white ceiling.

Here's another great vaulted ceiling in white, with dark wood exposed beams for contrast. The rich furnishings of the living room stand in natural light, courtesy of full height windows.

10. Here’s another example of the rich contrast that sets off a contemporary white room with darker beams and lots of natural light.

In a contemporary setting wrapped in off-white and grounded by rich hardwood flooring, the double height ceiling adds some fine contrast with dark exposed wood beams. Tall windows allow for an open, airy look.

11. The fireplace is the focal point of this room, but the exposed wooden beams serve to effectively draw your eye right to it!

The large red brick fireplace is the centerpiece of this rustic living room. Natural hardwood flooring contrasts with beige walls and ceiling, crossed with exposed wood beams.

12. Here’s a wonderful example of how effectively exposed logs can be used in a ceiling, instead of squared-off beams. I love the high contrast between the logs and the white ceiling. Plus, the log beams are the perfect companion for the rustic stone walls in this room.

The rich stone walls and hardwood flooring conspire within this living room for an elegant, timeless look. Log style exposed beams cross the white ceiling for high contrast.
