Most quilters are familiar with rotary cutters, because they are the most efficient tool for cutting lots of fabric in the least amount of time. But they aren’t just for quilting. A rotary cutter is a handy tool that will help you with loads of crafts and sewing projects! Today’s post is all about rotary cutters, including the best tips for using them safely and effectively.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Rotary cutters are extremely sharp, so safely is of the essence. Use a ruler or cutting guide that is at least 1/4″ thick between the cutter and your free hand. This keeps the blade safely away, and the thickness ensures that the blade won’t suddenly run up over the guide and into your hand.
- Cut all fabrics on a mat specifically made for a rotary cutter. The right self-healing mat gives you more control when you’re using the blade. Cutting on a mat is both safer and more efficient.
- This may seem obvious, but NEVER run the blade towards you or any part of your body.
- For more efficient cutting, always stand when using the rotary cutter. That gives you the proper leverage and a clear view of what you’re doing. It is also much easier to provide the even pressure needed for the smoothest cuts.
- Rotary cutters come with different sized blades, so it’s important to choose the right blade for the task. Generally, a small project needs a smaller blade, while a larger {or thicker} project demands a larger blade to cut through all the layers.
- Be sure to store your rotary cutter and blades safely away from little hands!
- When it is necessary to discard a dull blade, don’t underestimate how badly it could still hurt someone. A good tip is to wrap discarded blades in heavy tape before tossing them in the trash.

Really, such an informative post and helpful for me. I have Pink Power rotary cutter. It’s good but to be honest, it’s better to a bowl or some sort of curved edge on the fabric and cut around. By the way, thanks for your sharing this post. Seriously, thanks for all this awesomeness!!
