DIY Wainscoting is a classy way to add interest and texture to the walls in any room of your house. Did you know that the use of wainscoting dates back to the 13th century? That is when the Dutch used wainscoting on the bottom portion of walls to protect them from dents and other damage caused by furniture, riding boots, and other hazards. Here’s an example of a fully paneled wall. This is a DIY project that anyone can do! It was completed with some 1/2″ thick sheets of 4’x8′ MDF, cut into 4″ wide strips. The cut strips are 8′ long. It’s a good idea to paint the wall white, then nail up your wainscoting. Once you’re finished, paint everything in a uniform color. This particular wall is painted in a white semi-gloss interior latex the same color as the trim in the rest of the house.
