Grocery stores and Christmas tree lots sell fresh greenery wreaths every Christmas season, and they make quite a pretty penny from them, too! But did you know that if you have an evergreen tree in your yard, you can easily make your own? Not only will you save some bucks, it’s also fun. Stick around to see how to make a holiday wreath with real greenery.
You will need some basic supplies {try Michaels for all your crafting needs!} to make your own wreath:
- metal wreath form
- floral wire
- fresh greenery, cut in 6-12″ lengths
- other adornments you desire, such as pinecones, berries, and ribbon
Make your first bundle of greenery, choosing pieces that will make a good base. Place the bundle against the wreath form, and wrap both the bundle and the form with floral wire. Wrap it several times around, until the bundle feels securely attached to the wreath form. Leave the extra wire–don’t clip it off!
Continue to make small bundles of greenery, and layer them against the base. With each bundle you add, overlap it against the stems of the previous bundle to cover them. Securely wire each bundle to the wreath frame as you did with the first bundle.
Continue layering bundles of greenery and wiring them to the wreath form, until you get back to where you started. To end the wreath, tuck the last bundle’s stems underneath the greenery from the very first bundle. Wire it to the frame, and then you can clip off the wire.
Congratulations! You’ve made your basic fresh wreath! Now you can add additional adornments to your wreath. Just attach them to the frame with small pieces of wire, seen here.
Once you have added extra decorations if you desire, fluff the greenery, and add a ribbon to hang it with. It’s easy to loop the ribbon through the metal frame.
Thanks to Wholefully for sharing a great tutorial! Cassie suggests spritzing your fresh wreath with water 3-4 times a week to help prolong its life and keep it looking fantastic through the holidays.
